This finely-executed oil painting was produced by Prayat Tadonock in 1990. Prayat was trained as a fine artist according to Thai classical principles and then learned Western oil painting techniques. Instead of devoting himself to mythical and religious subject matter and learning the stylized conventions associated with those subjects, he dedicated himself to painting nature. For his paintings, he chose a highly realistic -almost photo-realistic -style. In this painting we see a young banana tree in full blossom, with the purple flower in full bloom, surrounding a cluster of young bananas. In some Asian cultures, bananas represent love, fertility and desire. One may see in this painting a simple depiction of a banana tree in bloom or a more metaphorical one. Both readings are appropriate.
