Surviving utalitarian pieces such as travelling coffers from this period and in this condition are rare. The ornamentation uses three different designs and sizes of floral studs suggesting that this was conceived as a piece of high quality. This Arcon is in exceptional condition, the leather, studwork, esctucheon, hasp, lock, key and handles are all original. The interior is lined with a charming painted linen stained a geometeric motif. It has a rich lustrous patina.
The exterior is upholstered in brown leather which is decorated with brass studs depicting two large stylised tulips and scrollwork either side of the lockplate and geometric patterns throughout. The studs are particularly Fine, three different types of studs have been used on the coffer all with intricate floral decoration. The wrought iron hasp, escutcheon, lock, key, ring hinges and side carrying handles are original. A pair of matching studded leather “feet”, probably later in date, similarly decorated in leather with studwork acting as a Stand to raise the base of the coffer from the floor. The interior lined with a charming painted linen with a geometric motif. The carcass pine. Wear, losses and repairs to leather commensurate with age.
